Membership Categories

A Fellow of ACEM (FACEM) has either:

• completed the FACEM Training Program; or
• completed all requirements as a Specialist International Medical Graduate (SIMG) under the College’s Specialist Pathway.

Ongoing Fellowship is subject to annual renewal requirements, including participation in an approved continuing professional development program.

An ACEM Fellow who has completed additional training is eligible to use additional post nominals associated with the area of training:

• FACEM PEM – An ACEM Fellow who has completed the PEM Training Program.
• FACEM PEM (APHRM) – An ACEM Fellow who has completed the PEM Training Program and the Associateship in PHRM.
• FACEM (APHRM) – An ACEM Fellow who has completed the Associateship in PHRM.

Honorary Fellowship (FACEM (Hon)) is awarded to individuals of renown, distinguished members of the medical profession and other eminent persons who have made a significant contribution to the specialty that merits recognition. Honorary Fellows need not necessarily be a member of the medical profession.

The membership category of Retired Fellow is a sub-class of FACEM membership available to Fellows who have retired from practice, including related activities such as teaching and examining, as a specialist emergency physician, and is no longer acting as an expert witness in the field of emergency medicine, except in certain cases (Refer to Regulation A: Governance).
 
Retired Fellows maintain the rights and privileges associated with Fellowship, including FACEM postnominal, however are exempt from CPD requirements, annual subscription fees and other Fellowship renewal requirements.
Declaration form

An Associate has satisfactorily completed the requirements of the Foundational Emergency Medicine Training Program (FEMTP)*, Intermediate Emergency Medicine Training Program (IEMTP)*, Advanced Emergency Medicine Training Program (AEMTP)*, or Pre-Hospital and Retrieval Medicine (PHRMTP) and has been formally admitted to membership of the College.

Ongoing membership as an Associate is subject to annual renewal requirements, including participation in an approved continuing professional development program.

Associate members are eligible to use the post nominal associated with the completed training program:

• AACEM (Foundational) – Completion of the Foundational Emergency Medicine Training Program (FEMTP).
• AACEM (Intermediate) – Completion of the Intermediate Emergency Medicine Training Program (IEMTP).         
• AACEM (Advanced) – Completion of the Advanced Emergency Medicine Training Program (AEMTP).
• A(PHRM) – Completion of the Pre-Hospital and Retrieval Medicine Training Program (PHRMTP).

*In line with the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA) legislation, as of 1 March 2024, the Emergency Medicine Diploma (EMD) has been renamed the Advanced Emergency Medicine Training Program (AEMTP) and the Emergency Medicine Diploma (EMD) has been renamed the Intermediate Emergency Medicine Training Program (IEMTP). The Diploma of Pre-Hospital and Retrieval Medicine (DPHRM) has been renamed the Pre-Hospital and Retrieval Medicine Training Program (PHRMTP).
 
To align with our educational program naming conventions, as of 1 September 2024, the Emergency Medicine Certificate (EMC) has been renamed the Foundational Emergency Medicine Training Program (FEMTP).

A Diplomate (Dip EM (ACEM)) has satisfactorily completed the requirements of the College’s Emergency Medicine Diploma (EMD) Training Program by 29 February 2024 and has been formally admitted to membership of the College.

From 1 February 2026, members in the Diplomate category will move into the Associate category, with the new post-nominal, AACEM (Intermediate), reflecting their updated membership and completed training level.

An Advanced Diplomate (Dip EM Adv (ACEM)) has satisfactorily completed the requirements of the College’s Emergency Medicine Advanced Diploma (EMAD) Training Program by 29 February 2024 and has been formally admitted to membership of the College.

From 1 February 2026, members in the Advanced Diplomate category will move into the Associate category, with the new post-nominal, AACEM (Advanced), reflecting their updated membership and completed training level.

A Certificant (Cert EM (ACEM)) has satisfactorily completed the requirements of the College’s Emergency Medicine Certificate (EMC) Training Program by 31 March 2025* and been formally admitted to membership of the College.

From 1 February 2026, members in the Certificant category will move into the Associate category, with the new post-nominal, AACEM (Foundational), reflecting their updated membership and completed training level.

Membership as an Educational Affiliate (SIMG or Area of need) is open to a:

• medical practitioner whose qualifications, training and experience have been assessed by the College as sufficient to enable them to practise safely with supervision in a specific position of workforce shortage in Australia; or
• suitably qualified medical practitioner, who was not trained in Australia or Aotearoa New Zealand and whose qualifications, training and experience have been assessed by the College as sufficient to enable them to practise safely under peer review; or
• suitably qualified medical practitioner, who was not trained in Australia or Aotearoa New Zealand and who is registered within a provisional vocational scope of practice (supervision or assessment) by the Medical Council of New Zealand;

Membership as an Educational Affiliate to a:

• medical practitioner registered to practise in Australia or Aotearoa New Zealand and whose practice is principally in the area of emergency medicine.

Ongoing membership of the College as an Educational Affiliate is subject to annual renewal requirements, including participation in an approved continuing professional development program.

Membership as an International Affiliate – Developing Country is open to a medical practitioner:

• who holds a Master of Medicine degree in Emergency Medicine (or equivalent degree) from a university in a developing country and who also is living and working in the field of Emergency Medicine a developing country

Membership is subject to annual renewal requirements. Participation in the ACEM CPD Program (as specified in Regulation E4.1.1) may be optional for International Affiliates. 

Membership as an International Affiliate – Non-Developing Country is open to a medical practitioner:

• with qualifications in emergency medicine that enables them to be recognised as a specialist in the jurisdiction in which they are domiciled and working, where that jurisdiction is not recognised by ACEM as a developing country.
