Hello and welcome,

Congratulations on your election to Fellowship of ACEM.

Your commencement as a College Fellow will open the door to some of the most engaging, challenging and fulfilling years of your life.

I’ve worked across Australia as a specialist emergency physician for nearly 20 years, having completed my training in both Australia and the United Kingdom. There is something special about emergency medicine and the enthusiasm and commitment of those who work in the ED.

In our field, ED teams work side by side under great pressure, united by trust and a shared purpose to improve patient outcomes and save lives. That unique mix of skill, dedication, care and collaboration is why I am so passionate about emergency medicine.

During your training, you will have mostly engaged with the College through its educational programs. However, the College’s work also extends to policy and advocacy on issues that matter deeply to us healthcare professionals, to our patients and to the broader community.

These include the advancement of science and research in our specialty, health system overcrowding, the wellbeing of our staff and patients within these systems and many other issues that impact health outcomes.

Can I strongly encourage you to keep an eye on the weekly ACEM Bulletin for the regular ‘expressions of interest’ to get involved in College entities? Pick one that interests you and throw your hat in the ring - you will learn so much from getting involved and the College will be all the healthier for hearing more voices from new Fellows.

This guide provides an overview of some of the issues and requirements you will need to be aware of as a Fellow. These include continuing professional development requirements, resources and benefits available to new Fellows, where you can find support, and how you can get involved in College life as a member.

Please take the time to read through this guide and don’t hesitate to contact the College if you need a hand.

I congratulate you on your journey to date and wish you all the best during your years as an ACEM Fellow.

Thank you,

Dr Peter Allely

ACEM President
