The Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM; the College) is responsible for training emergency physicians with the knowledge and skills required to care for people with life-threatening or urgent healthcare needs across all regions of Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand.

In alignment with this responsibility to educate well-rounded professionals grounded in a strong generalist foundation, ACEM is introducing a regional, rural and remote (RRR) training requirement for all trainees who commence the FACEM (Fellowship of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine) Training Program from 2027.

ACEM is currently trialling a number of initiatives that will inform the introduction of a minimum six-month full-time equivalent (FTE) term in a RRR emergency department (ED) as part of the requirements for the FACEM Training Program.

During training, medical practitioners gain clinical experience in a variety of EDs and hospital settings, including major referral and urban district sites, regional and rural EDs and other clinical practice settings.

Our regions are a rich and diverse source of emergency medicine experience offering trainees the opportunity to develop robust clinical skills by engaging with a broad array of cases commonly seen outside urban environments. This RRR experience will help develop flexible and adaptable professionals with a solid generalist foundation. By working across different departments, settings and environments, new Fellows will be ready to handle any situation, anywhere.

The RRR training requirement will be introduced for new trainees enrolling in the FACEM Training Program from the commencement of the 2027 training year. Doctors enrolling in the FACEM Training Program will be required to formally acknowledge this training requirement as a condition of their acceptance of a place on the training program.
