Basic Emergency Care Course (BEC) teaches a systematic approach to the initial assessment and management of time-sensitive conditions where early intervention saves lives.  The intent of these courses is to provide free, standardised, open-access education to all individuals who are likely to be providing emergency care in low-resource settings; this includes both front-line clinicians and community members.

ACEM through its GEC Committee and GEC Desk is actively supporting locally led delivery of BEC training across the Indo-Pacific region as a vehicle for improving emergency care across the region in the following roles:

  • IFEM BEC certifying organisation for Australia, Aotearoa New Zealand and Pacific region
  • Maintenance of Pacific region BEC database of courses, participants and trainers
  • Secretariat for the Pacific Regional BEC Course Steering Group

BEC certifying organisation

ACEM’s role as an IFEM BEC certifying organisation incorporates the certification of WHO ICRC IFEM BEC course and the facilitation of access to BEC facilitators and resources for organisations and countries wanting to deliver BEC training.

Pacific Regional BEC Steering Group

The Pacific Regional BEC Steering Group was established in 2024 after recognising the unique challenges of geography and limited resource when implementing BEC training in the Pacific. The Steering Group brings together over 16 organisations from across the region who have a shared mission to utilise BEC course as a vehicle for improving emergency care across the Pacific region.  It has established a Pacific BEC course implementation strategy and is working collaboratively to oversee and address the strategic priorities:

  • Stakeholder collaboration
  • Increase facilitators
  • Governance and systems
  • Contextualisation
  • Nurse empowerment
