The past few weeks have provided the starkest reminder yet in 2021 that COVID-19 continues to pose major threats to Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand.
I was excited to make my third trans-Tasman trip of 2021 in the last week of May following the formation of the travel bubble.
While Aotearoa New Zealand and Australia remain in relatively strong positions internationally in regard to the ongoing management of COVID-19, we are nevertheless confronting some other serious healthcare system challenges.
Yet another month punctuated by yet another snap COVID-19 lockdown. This tells us it will be some time before things begin to resemble normal for any extended period.
It has been yet another eventful month, with snap COVID-19 lockdowns in Victoria, New Zealand and Western Australia, as well as bushfires and floods in that state.
Welcome to the first ACEM President’s blog for 2021. With every new year comes an opportunity for fresh perspectives and a re-invigorated sense of hope and purpose; 2021 more-so than ever before.
This is my end-of-year message to all of you as we approach the final stages of an extraordinary 2020.

As we approach the final stages of a truly extraordinary year, we need to allow some hope and optimism to enter into our mindsets and thinking.
With the official global COVID-19 death toll having passed one million in September - and likely to be much higher unofficially - we faced another sombre reminder of the extraordinary year we are contending with.
