The Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM; the College) is pleased to confirm its inaugural Governance and Leadership Diversity report is now available online.

The 19-page report, to be produced annually, outlines data reflecting work the College has taken to embrace and promote inclusion and diversity, while acknowledging that inclusion and diversity in our two countries mean different things to different people.

The report shows that the College has made progress over the past two years in gender leadership representation. It also reports that the College has made a series of changes aimed at achieving greater leadership inclusivity and diversity.

These changes include the creation of the Diversity and Inclusion Steering Group, the establishment of the Advancing Women in Emergency Medicine Section.

The information contained in the report reflects data which was collected at the time stated in the report, and that since the completion of the report, further changes have occurred. For example, from an all-male Board of 2018, following this year’s College Annual General Meeting in October, the College now has a 60 per cent female Board.

The College acknowledges that diversity and inclusion is by no means just about gender, nor solely race or ethnicity, and that there is still more to be done as ACEM continues its focus on this important area.

The College leadership remains resolute in its commitment to this work and taking further steps to make ACEM and the practise of Emergency Medicine more progressive, more inclusive, and more diverse.

Over the next year, more work will be undertaken to identify further opportunities to further enable inclusivity, to empower our Emergency Physician membership to take on leadership roles and see representation which reflects our membership, and the communities we work for.
