The book will include poignant and powerful stories reflecting the incredible work that emergency care providers perform on a daily basis, highlighting concepts such as equity and humanity. It will describe the unique interactions and circumstances that constitute emergency care.

ACEM is seeking to illustrate the range of settings where emergency care is practiced, including rural, remote, Indigenous, urban, retrieval, resource-limited, humanitarian and disaster relief contexts, as well as capacity building and development programs. In particular, the book aims to profile clinician authors from low-and middle-income countries.

Requirements

Each story will be published as a stand-alone chapter, accompanied by high-quality photography.

The narrative of each story may be focused on either:

  • an individual clinician’s career journey, or their experiences delivering emergency care, including memorable events and patient interactions (auto-biographical or ‘first person’ in style)
  • a patient’s story or healthcare journey, strictly de-identified (‘third person’ in style)

The word limit is maximum 1200 words. Authors will not be paid for their contributions.

Expressions of Interest

If you are interested in contributing to the book as an author, please submit an expression of interest (your ‘pitch’) via the online form. All EOI submissions will be reviewed by an editorial working group, which will select authors to draft a submission. The working group will prioritise submissions that are powerful, poignant and personal, and reflect a diversity of settings, genders, countries, cultures and styles.

Clinician authors who are selected to submit a draft will be supported by ACEM and Hardie-Grant publishing to produce a final manuscript. Please note that a successful response to an EOI does not guarantee inclusion in the book, and final editorial decisions will rest with the editorial working group and Hardie-Grant publishing.

Deadline for EOI

The deadline for EOI submissions is Monday, 2 August 2021.

The editorial committee hopes to review all EOIs and notify successful authors Friday, 13 August 2021.

Authors would then be asked to submit their final copy by 10 September 2021.
