ACEM’s Diversity and Inclusion Steering Group held its inaugural meeting on Monday, July 2, 2018, at the College offices in Melbourne. The group, chaired by President Dr Simon Judkins, is made up of a range of trainees and FACEMs from across the membership.
The Group’s primary role is to oversee the implementation of the Discrimination, Bullying and Sexual Harassment Action Plan. The first meeting involved was productive, with wide-ranging discussion on a range of strategies to support increasing the diversity of College entities and the need to improve ED workplace culture.
The Group discussed a range of options aimed at increasing diversity across College entities. The Group also talked about the need to define the values which underpin the work of the College and reflect emergency medicine more generally. Developing meaningful and practical resources for Fellows and trainees across a range of subjects will also be a significant component of the Group’s work in the coming year.
As part of this the College will soon undertake the following activities:
- Develop a Governance Diversity Action Plan, with a discussion paper to be released in the coming month seeking members’ feedback on the best way to increase diversity across College entities.
- Developing ACEM Core Values - member feedback will also be sought on establishing new ‘ACEM Core Values’.
- The Royal Australasian College of Surgeons have shared their online resource Operating with Respect module – and this will soon be made available for ACEM Fellows and trainees to access.
- A new award will be launched in the coming months - the ‘ACEM Wellbeing Award’. This award will recognise those individuals and emergency departments that are enhancing wellbeing for their staff.
- Development of a College-wide mentoring program, in collaboration with other College entities.
