ACEM comments for reform to the Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health System and mental health care in emergency departments. Victoria’s EDs are providing a volume, range and complexity of mental health services without the resources, infrastructure or whole of hospital systems necessary to provide timely and appropriate care.

Three recommendations to the New South Wales Inquiry into the drug ‘ICE’. These being to strengthen existing data to inform policy development and service planning; increased funding and resourcing of emergency departments to manage high acuity presentations, and reframing public discourse and policy framework as a public health issue.
During a pandemic, EDs in large regional centres operate like urban EDs in most respects. Smaller rural emergency facilities face three additional problems: a smaller pool of resources; delays in replenishing resources; and lower community health literacy contributing to late patient presentations. Access block is the single most serious issue facing health systems in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand. ACEM is working with FACEMs, healthcare colleagues, academics, governments and health administrators to identify evidence-based, holistic interventions.

ACEM has provided a submission on the WA mental health, and alcohol and other drugs strategy 2025-2030. ACEM has 8 recommendations for the strategy, as well as some additions comments, including areas such as addiction medicine physician shortages, and advocating for good quality emergency medicine research.
