The IRTP provides greater opportunities for graduates interested in rural careers to maintain connections to rural communities while they complete post graduate training.

An IRTP post enables a specialist trainee to complete at least two thirds of their speciality training within a rural region (defined as Modified Monash Model [MMM] 2-7 locations), with only limited metropolitan rotations where necessary to meet speciality training program requirements.

Under IRTP, specialist trainees:

  • must show a commitment to working in a rural area;
  • must complete at least two thirds of their speciality training within a rural region (defined as Modified Monash Model [MMM] 2-7 locations); and
  • may complete limited metropolitan rotations where necessary to meet college education and accreditation standards.

In 2022 and 2023, ACEM is facilitating 12 IRTP posts through agreements with hospital ‘host’ settings throughout Australia (refer to the map below for host setting locations). Please filter the map below to ‘Programs’ / ‘IRTP’

IRTP funding and New Post Applications

IRTP is funded by the Commonwealth Department of Health (DoH) under the Specialist Training Program (STP).

STP seeks to extend vocational training for specialist registrars into regional, rural and remote and private facilities. The Integrated Rural Training Pipeline (IRTP) initiatives sits under the existing STP program with a focus on rural training.

All STP programs operate under the STP Operational Framework, and further information on IRTP can be found here.

ACEM has current IRTP funding agreements in place with health settings for the 2022 and 2023 academic training years.

New Post applications

The DoH hosts the New Post applications for health settings - previously known as Expressions of Interest (EoI’s). Applications for the current round close on 13 May 2022. Subsequent rounds will be notified through ACEM communication channels.

To find out more about the eligibility requirements, timeframes or to submit an application, please visit the DoH website: https://www.health.gov.au/initiatives-and-programs/specialist-training-program

Successful applications from this process will be added to College’s Reserve List and is not a guarantee of funding.
