Many negative outcomes can be distilled down to a state-wide lack of resources, from a lack of beds for inpatients, a severely understaffed ED, a medical record system that is not integrated with the rest of the hospital, or an absence of out-of-hours mental health services.

Statement on Exposure Prone Procedures in the Emergency Department

ACEM endorses that all ED healthcare workers (HCW) ensure that patients are not exposed to blood borne viruses (BBV). While exposure prone procedures (EPP) increase the risk of BBV transmission between HCWs and patients, EPPs are rarely performed in EDs. ACEM does not recommend regular routine testing of all ED HCWs for BBVs.

Climate Change National Framework - Adaptation & Mitigation Bill 2020

ACEM support a National Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation Framework as proposed by the Climate Change Bill 2020. The Bill has called for the establishment of a National Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation Framework and creation of the Climate Change Commission. It also calls for a Climate Change Risk Assessment for Australia.

Where the capacity of a hospital’s inpatient services cannot meet patient demand, access block and emergency department overcrowding occurs, which the ACEM considers are critical indicators of health system dysfunction. Hospital management bears the responsibility for restoring a safe working environment in these circumstances.

Policy on Immunisation in Emergency Departments

Emergency departments (EDs) frequently provide healthcare for populations at risk of being incompletely immunised. EDs are not resourced to be primary providers of routine immunisation, but opportunistic immunisations may be given to incompletely immunised patients who have limited access to other immunisation providers.

This Policy stablishes minimum standards in the provision of services to children and young persons who attend EDs. The primary focus of an ED is the delivery of emergency medical care to the acutely ill and injured. Emergency clinical care takes precedent over forensic considerations. As forensic evidence is not a core ED activity, there should be arrangements for seeking advice from a local forensic service.
