With a federal election in the air in Australia and a Budget due soon in Aotearoa New Zealand, this is a good time to reflect on the diligent work the College has been doing behind the scenes to set the foundations for a successful future for emergency medicine.
My first year as ACEM President has gone by in the blink of an eye, and I am so excited about all that the College has accomplished during this time.
It has been my privilege as ACEM President to spend the past few months travelling around Aotearoa New Zealand and Australia.
Thank you for your patience with my update. It has certainly been a very busy time since November, even hectic. The festive season is always a busy time in any emergency department and Alice Springs is no different – apart from being scorching hot!
I feel incredibly privileged and humbled to be the new President of ACEM. I also feel a little bit nervous.
While working in the ACEM President’s office for the last time, my phone rang and a FACEM friend asked me, how do you feel about reaching the end of your presidency? Proud, I replied. And a little weary.
It is hard for many of us who work in chronically under-resourced and overcrowded emergency departments to not get cynical. After all, it is an honestly earned cynicism. But I find it harder to be cynical in spring. Especially when the waratahs are out.
I imagine that when people think about emergency medicine, they picture it like the ED on a TV show: all gunshots and car accidents.
This month, ACEM publicly supported the Voice to Parliament and Declaration of Recognition in the Australian Constitution.
This month, from 14 to 20 May, we celebrate ACEM Wellness Week. It’s a vital opportunity to take some time to reflect on how best to support ourselves and each other.
