End Update

The Australasian College for Emergency Medicine in Australia and New Zealand has expressed its support for marriage equality, led by ACEM President Professor Tony Lawler.

“The Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM) believes all patients across Australia and New Zealand deserve the opportunity to experience quality, patient-focused emergency care, in a timely manner and with the greatest chance of positive outcomes. This means ensuring a safe, compassionate and supportive environment for everyone who enters an emergency department,” said Tony.

“At this time, during the marriage equality debate, we express our support for Marriage Equality for LGBTIQ Australians.”

“As emergency physicians, we stand in support of equality, and for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, and queer (LGBTIQ) community to have equal rights in Australia. We recognise the evidence based view of many health practitioners that inequality has a significant and deleterious impact on the mental health of LGBTIQ people. Our members see this impact in their emergency departments too often.”

“ACEM’s members strive daily to get the best possible health outcomes for people who need their help, which is why we have signed up to the Coalition for Change. At a time when the public debate on marriage equality continues, we extend our support and compassion to the LGBTIQ community.”
