The College looks forward to building upon the progress made with the Labor Government to ensure better and safer emergency departments (EDs) for all clinicians, healthcare workers and patients.
Prior to the election, ACEM outlined three key priority areas: better care for regional communities through continued ongoing funding for the Emergency Medicine Education and Training (EMET) program; the establishment of a National Emergency Medicine Research Foundation (NEMRF); and national leadership and reform to ensure our EDs are safe for staff, patients and their families.
ACEM encourages the government to continue to genuinely engage with emergency clinicians on innovative strategies and achievable solutions that can improve the delivery of safer emergency care for all Australians.
ACEM President Dr Stephen Gourley urges Mr Albanese to continue his government’s focus on implementing solutions for the issues affecting Australia’s EDs: overcrowding, prolonged wait times, and insufficient investment in resources and staff.
“ACEM congratulates Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Labor on being re-elected to government. ACEM welcomed health being a major election priority, as evidenced by the substantial commitments for investment into Medicare and the health sector during the campaign. The College looks forward to continuing to advocate for measures that will improve healthcare for all Australians,” Dr Gourley said.
“We invite the government to work with the College on implementing evidence-based solutions to ensure sustainable, high-quality emergency care across Australia, from city centres to regional, rural and remote areas.
“Everyone deserves to feel safe to give and receive equitable, timely and world-class healthcare from the cradle to the grave, no matter where they live.
“As always, we stand ready to work with the government to achieve a fairer, safer and better-functioning healthcare system.”
