The provision of patient identifying information, without the patient’s consent, is a breach of privacy legislation in both Australia and New Zealand. The consent can be both explicit and implicit. Many hospitals will have a privacy statement or consent which indicates that it conducts College training and that sometimes patient identifying information may be necessary to be disclosed in the course of training.

In regards to CPD, a hospital privacy statement or consent form would not usually cover CPD compliance.

The inclusion of information such as a patient’s name, address and patient ID number may be a breach of patient privacy and legislative obligations, and expose you to legal claims.
