The Medical Board of Australia (MBA) appointed an expert advisory group to provide advice on how to support medical practitioners, to maintain and enhance their professional knowledge and skills, and remain fit for practice. This was originally termed ‘Revalidation’.

Consultation was carried out over a number of years, with input from a range of stakeholders. In November 2017 the MBA announced it has not adopted the term Revalidation, and has instead developed the evidence-based Professional Performance Framework, to be implemented progressively over a number of years.

“Nothing is going to change tomorrow for individual doctors. We will be consulting widely and seeking expert advice on many elements of the framework,” said Board Chair Dr Joanna Flynn AM.

There are five pillars to the framework:

  • Strengthened CPD.
  • Active assurance of safe practice.
  • Strengthened assessment and management of medical practitioners with multiple substantiated complaints.
  • Guidance to support practitioners.
  • Collaborations to foster a positive culture of medicine.

The MBA will continue to consult with stakeholders throughout the implementation process, and we will keep you informed and undertake our own consultation processes during this time.
