The peak body for emergency medicine in Australia and New Zealand supports the Urgent Medical Treatment Bill introduced in Parliament by Professor Kerryn Phelps and the crossbench.

Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM) President Dr Simon Judkins said: “As Professor Phelps stated, there is an urgent medical crisis in Australia’s offshore detention centres, particularly for those children who have been held on Nauru for as long as five years.”

The Bill would address this crisis by allowing for the temporary transfer of people held in offshore processing centres to be brought to Australia for medical assessment and treatment.

ACEM has previously called for the urgent action to protect the health of families in detention on Nauru, and commends other specialist medical bodies including The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners, The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and the Australian Medical Association for supporting Professor Phelps’s bill.
