Lead your community: join an ACEM Network Executive

Networks are popular and growing, with 42 per cent of FACEMs and 10 per cent of trainees already belonging to one. Behind each one is an executive making it happen. The next one could include you.

What is an ACEM Network?

Networks are free, virtual communities of practice that connect peers who share a special clinical or professional interest. They are not traditional committees. They are dynamic, member-driven communities where Fellows, trainees, other ACEM members and colleagues from emergency departments across Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand connect, share learning, collaborate and advance practice together.

Each network is actively built and led by its executive, which encourages the sharing of resources and knowledge, and advocates for its area of practice, supported at every step by the Member Experience Team.

The three engagement pillars

Every network operates across three pillars. As an executive member, you bring them to life.

Engage

Build collegiality and connection between network members across regions, career stages and practice settings, creating a community where anyone can ask a question, share an experience or join a discussion on emerging topics.

Collaborate

Move from conversation to action. Executives convene focused groups to co-develop resources, contribute to education and scientific activities, and support research and joint initiatives that advance the specialty.

Build practice knowledge

Capture the insights that emerge from your community, elevate useful contributions and turn shared experience into resources, education and collective knowledge with lasting value.

Who we are looking for

You do not need years of committee experience. Executives thrive on fresh perspectives, and positions are available for Fellows, trainees and other member categories. We look for:

• ACEM membership in good standing
• Formal membership of the network
• A commitment to equal opportunity and workplace diversity
• Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills, working consultatively with a range of stakeholders
• Strong leadership qualities and a desire to promote the network’s area of interest
• A genuine desire to engage with all members of the network

What is the commitment?

Executive roles are designed to fit around a busy clinical life, and College staff support your network’s day-to-day activities.

• Term – two years, with up to 12 members on each executive, led by a Chair and Deputy Chair
• Meetings – the executive meets virtually at least twice a year (members attend at least 50 per cent of meetings), with the option of a face-to-face catch-up at the Annual Scientific Meeting
• Work plan – help shape an annual work plan and contribute to the projects and working groups that flow from it
• Community – help convene at least two meetings of the full network each year, including at least one virtual event
• Communication – contribute content for network newsletters, reports and webpages

Find your network

There is a network for almost every interest in emergency medicine, and new networks are in development.

• Advancing Women in Emergency Network – advocates for and supports the advancement of women in emergency medicine through networking, mentoring and policy development.
• Clinical Trials Network – promotes investigator-initiated, collaborative, multicentre clinical research in emergency medicine across Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand.
• Emergency Department Epidemiology Network – uses large-scale, routinely collected data to equitably improve emergency department care and save lives.
• Emergency Telehealth Network – develops, supports, educates, researches and advocates for the safe, effective and efficient use of telehealth.
• Geriatric Emergency Medicine Network – promotes quality, timely emergency care in the best setting for older persons.
• Paediatric Emergency Medicine Network – builds a community that supports and advocates for optimal paediatric care in every emergency department.
• Pre-Hospital and Retrieval Medicine Network – connects emergency medicine  with an interest in pre-hospital and retrieval medicine.
• Private Emergency Medicine Network – promotes quality care, training and research in private emergency departments, and recognition for those working in the sector.
• Regional, Rural and Remove Emergency Medicine Network – offers peer support, local and regional connections, shared innovation, relevant education and community events, and a pathway into ACEM's RRR advocacy.
• Sustainable Emergency Medicine and Climate Advocacy Network – supports ACEM as a lead organisation in sustainable emergency medicine and preparedness for the health impacts of climate change.
• Trauma Emergency Medicine Network – furthers trauma prevention and treatment through multidisciplinary, patient-centred and evidence-based emergency care.
• Workforce Wellbeing Network – develops, supports, educates, researches and advocates for the wellbeing of trainees, members and College employees.

How to apply

Joining an executive is a simple, three-step process.

• Join your network – you must be a formal member of the network to nominate. Membership is free and it takes just minutes to join
• Respond to the expression of interest – Executive positions, including Chair and Deputy Chair, are advertised every two years ahead of each new term, and casual vacancies are advertised as they arise
• Appointment – appointments are made in line with the network’s terms of reference, the Policy on Networks and Regulation A9
