In 2018, ACEM is managing 77 STP posts, with 55 posts continuing in 2019-2020. Funding for STP posts is provided for salary support for trainees and additional costs associated with working in rural areas (rural loading) or private hospitals (Private Infrastructure and Clinical Supervision/ PICS).

Specialist trainees complete training in regional, rural and remote, and private hospitals, as well as non-emergency department special skills and critical care terms.

STP funding

Funding for STP posts is provided by the Commonwealth Department of Health’s Specialist Training Program.

Applications for funding are currently closed. An Expression of Interest (EOI) for STP posts for 2018 – 2020 was completed in 2017. Successful sites were announced in November 2017. There is currently a reserve list of posts, assessed as suitable, but unable to be funded with the available funding. The reserve posts will be considered should further funds become available. As ACEM has an extensive reserve list of posts, will not need to participate in further EOIs before the end of the current contract approaches (2020), when decisions may be made by Government about further funding.
