Recommendations in this section refer to the care of women in the second or third trimesters of pregnancy, with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 disease, presenting to healthcare services staffed by emergency clinicians.

The following recommendations refer to the care of women in the second or third trimesters of pregnancy, with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 disease, presenting to healthcare services staffed by emergency clinicians.

We recommend:

  1. Prioritisation of the wellbeing of the mother, in keeping with usual practice. [Link]
  2. Early specialist advice for situations where overlap between pregnancy symptoms and COVID-19 symptoms may cause confusion (e.g. fever with ruptured membranes, shortness of breath with pre-eclampsia). In emergency situations where senior specialist advice is not immediately available, we recommend adoption of appropriate infection prevention and control procedures.

We do not recommend:

  1. Delaying obstetric management in an emergency to test for COVID-19.
