Program Overview

The ACEM CPD program provides a comprehensive context for physicians to actively engage in continuing professional development in emergency medicine. The ACEM CPD Program builds on existing knowledge and skills of Fellows and Non Fellow Participants as they progress along their professional pathway. The ultimate goal of the program is the provision of optimal care and enhanced outcomes for patients and communities. We aim to provide efficient and effective membership services and have a suite of resources which are appropriate for CPD.

CPD Program for Fellows

The ACEM CPD program is designed to both document, and encourage Fellows’ participation in professional development activities that extend their specialist expertise in emergency medicine.

CPD Program for Non Fellows

Doctors working in emergency medicine in Australia and New Zealand are encouraged to participate in ACEM CPD. Once enrolled, Non-Fellows can record their educational activities in CPD Online. This CPD recording platform reflects the ACEM CPD Program and enables participants to plan, record, monitor and download certificates of compliance within the ACEM CPD program. In addition, Non-Fellow Participants are given access to a number of resources to enhance their emergency medicine knowledge and skills. These include the Emergency Medicine Certificate and Diploma materials, online questions developed for Fellows, as well as a number of podcasts, eLearning modules and other resources housed on ACEM's eLearning platform.

For more information about the ACEM CPD Program requirements see CPD Program.

Participation in CPD

Participation in ACEM CPD enables Fellows and Non-Fellows to meet the registration requirements of physicians who are:

  • Registered as Emergency Medicine Specialists in Australia with the Australian Medical Board (administered by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA), or

  • Registered in the Vocational Scope of Practice as Emergency Medicine Specialists in New Zealand with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ).

The CPD Calendar

The ACEM CPD year runs by the financial year, from 1 July to 30 June in the following year.

New Fellows Enrolment in CPD

On gaining Fellowship, new Fellows are enrolled in the CPD Program. The maximum time period between gaining Fellowship and starting CPD is now six months. New Fellows commence CPD at two time points in the year.

1 July: new Fellows gaining Fellowship between 1 January and 30 June of the current year.

1 January: new Fellows gaining Fellowship between 1 July and 31 December of the previous year

New Fellows will receive a letter from the CPD Office welcoming them to the CPD program in the month after gaining their Fellowship.

Non Fellow Enrolment in CPD

Doctors working in emergency medicine who want to participate in ACEM CPD may enrol at any time during the CPD year. Annual CPD requirements and Non-Fellow Participant fees are not reduced pro-rata e.g. if a Non-Fellow Participant enrols in CPD on 1 January 2017 the annual CPD requirements for the July 2016 - June 2017 period will need to be met.
