Workplace-Based Assessments (WBAs)
What are WBAs?
WBAs involve short periods of observation and/or discussion with a trainee in clinical practice, followed by structured feedback to the trainee and an assessment of the trainee's performance.
What are my requirements?
You are required to complete the following WBAs:
- Five x Mini-Clinical Evaluation Exercises (Mini-CEXs)
- Six x Direct Observation of Procedural Skills (DOPS)
- Two x Case-Based Discussions (CBDs)
- One Procedural Checklist.
What do I need to do?
- Each of the WBA assessments needs to be undertaken by an approved EMCD Supervisor
- With the approval of your EMCD Supervisor, Mini-CEX and DOPS WBAs may be undertaken by a Fellow of ACEM (FACEM). In this case, the completed WBAs must be provided to your EMCD Supervisor before submission to the College
- Your Procedural Checklist may be signed-off by an approved EMCD Supervisor, a FACEM or any registered specialist medical practitioner, as long as it is applicable to their area of clinical practice.
EMC Online Learning Modules
The EMC online learning modules are a series of audio, video, graphics, animation and online quizzes.
You are required to complete the following EMC online learning modules:
- Undertake initial assessment and management
- Manage common emergency presentations
- Participate in clinical support activities and administration.
Emergency Skills Workshops
You are required to complete two emergency skills workshops:
- Advanced Life Support (ALS)
- Basic Life Support (BLS)
Contact the EMCD Training team via email if you already hold a current ALS or BLS, to determine if it meets the EMC requirements.
Written Case Reflections
Written case reflections are evidence of your learning outcomes and enable you to reflect on your clinical practice.
You are required to submit ten written case reflections based on cases you encountered in the ED.
EMC MCQ online examination
The EMC MCQ exam is completed online in your hospital under supervision. It is 60 minutes in duration and consists of 40 multiple choice questions.
The EMC examinations will be held on the following dates at 12pm Melbourne Time.
- Friday 18 March 2022 - Closing Date: 25 February 2022
- Friday 24 June 2022 - Closing Date: 03 June 2022
- Friday 09 September 2022 - Closing Date: 19 August 2022
To be eligible to sit the EMC online examination, you must have:
- Completed at least four months full-time equivalent ED time
- Completed the online learning modules and their associated assessments
- Completed all WBAs
- Completed the BLS and ALS workshops
- Submitted 10 written case reflections
- A statement of attainment entered by the EMC primary supervisor.
Examination frequently asked questions
What is a statement of attainment?
Once you have completed all of the EMC training program assessments, your primary EMC supervisor will submit a statement of attainment to the College. This is a statement confirming that you have completed all your required assessments and that you are eligible to sit the EMC online examination.
How do I apply to sit the EMC online examination?
Contact the EMCD Training team via email once you are eligible.
What if I fail the EMC online examination?
You may apply to resit on the next scheduled exam date. The resit fee is AUD $500.
